Spring comes to BCE with a celebration of the natural elements: earth, air, and water. Through music from around the world, we explore humanity’s complex relationship to the world around us.
Program:
“Hymn of Ancient Lands”—a trilingual setting of Caedmon’s Hymn by Australian composer Joe Twist
“Songs of Nature”—Antonín Dvořák wrote this five-song cycle in just three days in 1882, selecting Czech texts that connect the beauties of music and of nature
“I Go Among Trees”—American composer Giselle Wyer bases this work on Wendell Berry’s poem about finding peace in a forest
“The Bluebird” by Charles Villiers Stanford is considered one of the best English partsongs ever written
“Tides of Ocean” by Matthew Orlovich describes an ocean voyage across the equator and the first glimpse of the Southern Cross constellation
“A Night Rain in Summer” by Alvin Trotman, an young Texas-based composer, captures the beauty after the rain falls.
“Across the Empty Square” by Connecticut-based composer Ellen Voth was inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic and explores how we can make progress against hate, fear, and isolation
“I Dream a World” by Rosephanye Powell provides uplifting music one of Langston Hughes famous poems
“Requiem”—Eliza Gilkyson wrote this piece a song of grief following the Asian tsunami in December 2004, and the song found a renewed audience after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region
“We Can Mend the Sky” by Jake Runestad combines texts by Somali immigrants to the United States to compose a musicl an affirmation of hope as we all embrace the diversity around us

COVID-19 Safety Precautions at BCE Concerts
BCE will always prioritize the safety of our singers and audience members. To maximize everyone’s safety and enjoyment at the Holiday Concert, the following policies will be in place:
Masks: Face masks are strongly recommended. Please bring a mask that you can wear comfortably for the duration of the concert. (BCE will also provide masks if needed).
Vaccines: All audience members may be asked to show proof of receiving a vaccination or boosters against COVID-19 from the past six months, or to show a negative Covid test result from the past 72 hours. (Rapid and PCR test results are accepted).
Stay Home If You’re Sick: If you are feeling at all sick, please stay home. You can request a full refund for tickets that you are unable to use due to illness.
