Boston Choral Ensemble Declares Stacy Garrop Winner of 9th Annual Commission Competition

BOSTON – March 25, 2016 – Boston Choral Ensemble (BCE) is proud to present the winner of their 9th Annual Commission Competition, Stacy Garrop, and Honorable Mentions, Dominic DiOrio and Dana Kaufman.

Started in 2007, this annual competition aims to identify a talented composer and support them in the performance of a new work for chamber choir to be premiered by Boston Choral Ensemble.  The Commission Competition challenges composers with a rigorous application process which includes the submission of proposals for a not-yet written, unaccompanied choral work.   A prize of US $1,500 is awarded to the winner.

This year, BCE received an impressive number of submissions from around the world.   The selection jury reviewed around 60 applications, which included work samples from each individual composer. A handful of finalists emerged from the pool of candidates, leading to a winner and honorable mentions being selected. This year’s Commission Competition helped to strengthen Boston Choral Ensemble’s unwavering commitment to the creation of new music.

Competition wStacy Garrop headshotinner Stacy Garrop’s music is centered on direct and dramatic narrative.  Stacy feels that, “The sharing of stories is a defining element of our humanity; we strive to share with others the experiences and concepts that we find compelling.” In her works, this manifests programmatically in pieces without text and more directly in pieces that draw upon poets and writers for source material. She has won numerous awards including a Fromm Music Foundation Grant, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Music Composition Prize, and two Barlow Endowment commissions, among others.  She has been commissioned by a variety of ensembles and organizations, and is an accomplished recording artist. Stacy earned degrees in music composition at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (B.M.), University of Chicago (M.A.), and Indiana University-Bloomington (D.M.). She teaches at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and is on the composition faculty of the annual Fresh Inc Festival, sponsored by Fifth House Ensemble.
