Boston Choral Ensemble’s 2017 – 2018 season showcases connections within and between its four concerts.
Our season opens with French Connection: Fête, a festival service as might have been sung at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Francis Poulenc’s stunning Mass in G, one of the twentieth century’s most challenging choral works, will be sung alongside works by Maurice Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen, with organ music by Jean Langlais performed on the historic 1897 Hutchings Great Organ in the magnificent Mission Church in Boston.
French Connection: Fête
Saturday, November 4, 8:00 p.m.
Mission Church, Boston
Poulenc’s Christmas Motets serve as a connection to Christmas Connection: Noel, which also celebrates the 75th anniversary of the death of Hugo Distler (1908-1942) with excerpts from Die Weihnachtsgeschichte (Christmas Story). The audience joins in the holiday fun with favorite carols to sing along with the grand organ at Old South Church, followed by a festive reception.
Christmas Connection: Noel
Saturday, December 16, 3:00 p.m.
Old South Church, Boston
Deutscher Konnekt: Totentanz focuses on another piece by Distler, his Totentanz, Op. 12. The program continues with this juxtaposition of death and dance, with music by Anton Heiller and Hans Werner Henze, Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien (Funeral music), Op. 7 traces the theme back centuries.
Deutscher Konnect: Totentanz
Saturday, March 3, 8:00 p.m.
Marsh Chapel, Boston
Our season comes to a springtime close with Rainbow Connection: Pride, focusing on works by LGBTQAI composers and writers. Coinciding with our 10th annual commission competition, Rainbow Connection features a premiere by this year’s winner, Mari Esabel Valverde, setting the poetry of Amir Rabiyah. Music by openly gay composers Poulenc and Henze revisits themes from the season’s earlier concerts.
